Known issues in Word 2011

If you experience this issue, substitute the Gulim font for the Malgun Gothic font. Click Word > Preferences > Compatibility. Click Font Substitution, then under Substituted font, select Gulim.

You cannot drag a bitmap (.bmp) format file from the Finder to a document in Word 2011. To insert a .bmp file into a document, on the Insert menu, point to Photo, and then click Picture from File.

Parenthetical citations that are inserted into the body of a document are updated automatically when changes are made in the Citations Manager. However, citations in footnotes do not update automatically. These citations are inserted as static text and must be updated manually.

Microsoft Word 2010 for Windows can create ligatures only for OpenType fonts. Word for Mac 2011 can create ligatures for OpenType (.otf file name extension) and TrueType fonts (.ttf file name extension) that use Apple Advance Typography (AAT) features (for example, Zapfino). If you want to use ligatures and plan to share Word 2011 documents with Word for Windows, make sure that you use OpenType fonts. You can use the Font Book application to determine what kind of font you're using. The Font Book application is included with Mac OS X v10.6 (Snow Leopard).

If you frequently share documents with people who use Microsoft Word 2010 for Windows and you want to be sure that you don't use TrueType typography features that are incompatible with Microsoft Word 2010 for Windows, you can turn off TrueType typography features. To turn off TrueType typography features, on the Format menu click Font, click the Advanced tab, and then clear the Enable TrueType typography features checkbox.

If you run Office in a NetBoot or network home folders configuration, you cannot save documents to Windows Live SkyDrive or SharePoint if they are located on a network location that uses the AFP or NFS file system.

Text and images that were created by using the ink features in Microsoft Office for Windows cannot be displayed in Word for Mac 2011. Ink features are typically found in Microsoft Office for Windows running on a Tablet PC.

The Find and Replace pane in Word cannot be captured in a macro recording. However, you can capture the Advanced Find and Replace dialog box in a macro recording. To access the Advanced Find and Replace dialog box, on the Edit menu, point to Find, and then click Advanced Find and Replace.

If you install Word 2011 and Word 2008 on the same computer, be aware that if you customize the menus, toolbars, and commands in Word 2011, those customizations will overwrite the menus, toolbars, and commands in Word 2008.

If Japanese language features are enabled and you use the Formatting toolbar, text that you add is not converted to Japanese characters. To work around this issue, turn off the Formatting toolbar by pointing to Toolbars on the View menu, and then clicking Formatting. Alternatively, to use any toolbars that contain the Styles pop-up menu with Japanese language features, such as the Formatting toolbar, you must remove the Styles pop-up menu by pointing to Toolbars on the View menu, and then clicking Customize Toolbars and Menus. On the toolbar, click the Style pop-up menu and drag it off the toolbar to remove it.

To add the Styles pop-up menu to a toolbar from which it was removed, click the View menu, point to Toolbars, and then click Customize Toolbars and Menus. On the Toolbars and Menus tab, select the check box next to the toolbar, and then click the Commands tab. In the Commands list, scroll to the Style pop-up menu and then drag it to the toolbar.

You cannot open files located on SharePoint or Windows Live SkyDrive from Safari or Mozilla Firefox until you have opened Word, Excel, or PowerPoint at least one time.

Earlier versions of Office for Mac included Organization Chart, a tool for creating and editing organization charts. Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 does not include Organization Chart. When you open a document that contains an object that was created by using Organization Chart, you can view it, but you cannot edit it.

When you set a custom dictionary to work only for a specific language, the language setting is not used when you check the spelling in Excel or PowerPoint.

If you clear the Save password in my Mac OS X keychain check box when you access the Active Directory Rights Management Services (AD RMS) server, you will have to sign in multiple times. To work around this issue, make sure that the Save password in my Mac OS X keychain check box is selected.

Per Apple guidelines, when you paste a vector PICT image, it is saved as PDF instead of PICT, and you cannot ungroup the PDF image.

If you add a link to a picture that is located on a Web site, the next time that you open the file, the picture is displayed as a red X. This occurs because the application does not recognize the Web site path. To work around this issue, on the Web site, copy the image, and then paste it into the Office for Mac application.

If you are recording a macro, the actions that you perform in the Format Chart dialog box are not recorded. To work around this issue, use the Chart tab on the ribbon when you record a macro.

If you set Parental Controls on the Mac OS, Office for Mac applications might not work correctly. To resolve the issue, on the Apple menu, click System Preferences, click Parental Controls, and then turn off Parental Controls.

Office for Mac displays no clip art in the Entertainment, Emotions, or Food and Dining categories in the Clip Art Gallery. To work around the issue, search for the following clip art:

A document that has a hyperlink that includes non-Latin characters, a shape, or is otherwise corrupted, might prevent you from saving or editing the hyperlink. To work around the issue, delete the object that you added the hyperlink to.

You cannot edit fields in the Open, Print, Save to SkyDrive, Save to SharePoint, or other similar dialog boxes when you have the Media Browser open. To resolve the issue, close the Media Browser, and then reopen the dialog box.

Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 does not let you print a Visual Basic project. To work around the issue, copy the code of your Visual Basic project, paste it into a text-editing program, and then print.
